Kathrine M. Cays

Entwining imagination, cognition, and creativity with a kinship worldview*.

My approach to creativity is strongly influenced by a profound bond with the natural living world. My creative endeavors are dedicated to delving into themes of imaginative thought and examining the interconnectedness of the human and natural living world while addressing the repercussions of colonialism. Through my work, I invite viewers to connect with the world around them and encourage a mindful exploration of broader social and environmental issues.

Artist Statement

My creative process is entwined with the natural living world. My multi-media artworks, drawings, and paintings include visual representations of Nature and impressions from Nature, and my sculptural work includes mindfully gathered materials from Nature. My themes and narratives include imaginal thinking. My artwork recognizes the intersectionality between human and non-human worlds while confronting the validity of colonialism. As a lifelong naturalist, I have found solace and inspiration by spending time in Nature. I recognize the nondiscriminatory giving, unfolding nurture, and spiritual presence in Nature, along with the fierce intensities that can arise within Nature’s processes that call for understanding and respect.

To add value to my community, over the past four years, my visual art and creative writing have begun to focus on the interplay between psychosocial behavior and Nature. My drawings, paintings, and assemblage installation artwork join with Nature and visually identify a point of communion between human and non-human worlds. My work as a nature-based expressive arts therapist informs my creation process, which promotes a connection between humankind and the other than human world. In addition, my current body of work invites people to see Nature from a fresh perspective, to consider intersectionality, power, and vulnerability, and to expand awareness through conceptual dialogues.
